Itinerary for Latest 10-Day Adventure in Northern Cape
Day 1: Arrival in Upington
Arrive at Upington Airport and take the transfer to your accommodation on Day 1. Take the drive to Augrabies Falls National Park immediately after you settle in and tour the beautiful falls and their surrounds of desert. Take various scenic walks along the trails with dramatic views of the gorge and river. Make your discoveries about the unique flora and fauna in the area, along with the information on local environments. Late in the afternoon, enjoy a sundowner at a viewpoint overlooking the falls. Return to the accommodation for a peaceful overnight stay in Upington.
Day 2: Augrabies Falls National Park
Start your day by exploring Augrabies Falls this morning with a morning walk along the scenic trails and enjoy the views of the waterfall and gorge. Thereafter, visit Quiver Tree Forest to see these interesting quiver trees in an awesome desert landscape. Continue with a visit to Gannaga Pass for its panoramic views. Later this evening, retire to your accommodation for dinner. Spend your evening in relaxation after being out into the day's adventure. Overnight in Upington or any nearby lodge.
Day 3: Upington to Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park
Depart to Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, approximately 2-3 hours from Upington, entering at Twee Rivieren Gate. In the afternoon, set up and head for your first drive, exploring this celebrated place of red dunes, dried-out riverbeds, and many other animals like lions, cheetahs, and springbok. Stop for lunch at one of the park's rest camps. In the afternoon, drive for more sightings. Evening, proceed for a sunset at any of the viewpoints. Later in the evening, return to the rest camp for dinner and night's stay.
Day 4: Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park
Early morning game drive on Day 4 in Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, ideal for game viewing at sunrise. Enter the park's red dunes, dry riverbeds, and waterholes with the hope of viewing wildlife such as cheetahs, lions, and antelope. Have lunch at a rest camp and continue your afternoon drive. Take a late afternoon game drive or simply take it easy at your camp. End the day with a stunning sunset and overnight stay at a rest camp inside the park.
Day 5: Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and Wildlife safari.
Early morning on Day 5, take a game drive in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park to look for predators such as lions, leopards, and cheetahs. After the game drive, take a further tour of the various landscapes of the park, including its famous red dunes and peculiar waterholes, in search of other wildlife. Have lunch at one of the rest camps before an afternoon game drive. Evening attend to another spectacular sunset and retire for dinner at your rest camp. Overnight inside the park.
Day 6: Kgalagadi to Namaqualand
On day 6: Leave Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park for Namaqualand; drive for 4 to 5 hours. Look around some of the small towns in the area, like Pofadder, for an idea of life and beautiful desert landscapes. During the afternoon, you will visit one of the Namaqualand villages to learn about their traditional way of life, crafts, and farming practices. Later, drive back to Upington for dinner at one of the local restaurants. Overnights at a Guest house or Lodge in Upington.
Day 7: Explore Namaqualand and Cultural Sites
Will be spent exploring Namaqualand's cultural and natural attractions. Pay a morning visit to a local Namaqualand village and experience traditional crafts and farming practices; then explore the Namaqualand Flower Route-should this fall within the flowering season, generally in August and September-and Goegap Nature Reserve for stunning desert scenery and wildlife; enjoy the scenic views with plenty of flora. In the evening, drive back to Upington for dinner and an overnight stay in a local lodge or guesthouse.
Day 8: Explore the Orange River Region
Take a beautiful Orange River drive on Day 8; the river is lined by lush riverbanks and forms tranquil landscapes. Take an afternoon boat ride on its tranquil waters to see deserts and wild life on either side, or spend the afternoon taking in local vineyards for some wine tasting to experience this growing wine culture. Or simply relax at the river and take in some of the local attractions. In the late afternoon, travel back to Upington for dinner at a local restaurant, with time to reflect on the peaceful beauty of the area. Overnight in Upington.
Day 9: Kalahari and Cultural Exploration
Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, further into the wildlife. Take a morning game drive through the park to areas not seen previously, including the Nossob Riverbed, which is renowned for predator sightings. Cultural heritage sites are visited in the afternoon, interacting with local communities and learning about their traditions, crafts, and way of life. Enjoy another scenic sundowner game drive in the park, capturing the beauty of the Kalahari into the evening. Return to your rest camp for dinner and overnight.
Day 10: Departure
Take one last early morning game drive in Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and take in the last views of the park's wildlife and landscapes. After breakfast, drive to Upington, taking in any remaining sights along the way. If time allows, this may be an opportunity to relax by the Orange River or further explore the town's attractions. Later this afternoon, make your way to Upington Airport for your onward flight. It's time to reflect on 10 days of incredible experiences as your Northern Cape adventure draws to a close.
